What it is
The Pinewood Derby is a classic Cub Scout event where scouts design, build, decorate, and race small wooden cars. Using a block of pinewood, wheels, and axles from the kit, scouts work with their families to craft a car that follows the event rules for size, weight, and materials.
On race day, cars roll down a sloped track powered only by gravity. Pack 60’s setup may include a multi-lane aluminum track with computer-controlled timing sensors.
When it usually happens
The event is often held during the winter season.
Why scouts enjoy it
Scouts enjoy building something with their hands, testing ideas, decorating cars, cheering for friends, and seeing creativity on the track. The event promotes creativity, sportsmanship, and friendly competition.
What families should know
Families often help with safe tool use, sanding, painting, and learning the rules.
